Former SMU swimming great Steve Lundquist is one of 52 male and female swimmers named to the USA Swimming Team of the Century as published in the recent edition of Splash magazine.
The team is comprised of 26 men and 26 women, and was selected by an expert panel of historians, swimming writers, Olympic coaches and swimmers. Two individuals were selected in each event except the 100 and 200 freestyle, where six were selected. Janet Evans and Mary T. Meagher were the only swimmers to receive unanimous first-place votes on every ballot in a single event. Lundquist was one of 12 athletes to be a unanimous selection in an event.
Lundquist was a two-time champion (100 breast, medley relay) at the 1984 Olympic Games and a 1982 world champion in the 100 breast. He became the first man to swim under 1:02 in the 100 breast and set five world records in the event - holding the mark for nearly seven years. Lundguist also set six U.S. records in the 100 breast, holding that mark for nearly 12 years, and set American records in the 200 breast and 200 individual medley.
