SMU Rolls In Opener

DALLAS (SMU) -- The SMU Mustangs crushed visiting Savannah State, 74-54, on Friday, Nov. 16, to win their third straight season opener.
Starting one senior, one junior, a sophomore and two freshmen, Head Coach Mike Dement's squad jumped out early and never looked back in breezing to a 1-0 record to start the 2001-02 campaign.
The dynamic duo of Damon Hancock and Quinton Ross paced the Ponies with 24 and 21 points, respectively, on a combined 17-of-24 shooting, while freshman Patrick Simpson added eight points and eight rebounds.
"I thought we had a lot of first-game jitters," said Dement. "We have so many new guys that every time I looked out there we had three in the game. We're happy to get the win to start the season."
Next up for the Mustangs is Navy, who visits Moody Coliseum on Sunday, Nov. 18, for a 2:00 p.m. match-up.
