DALLAS (SMU) -- The SMU Mustangs dropped their first game of the season on Tuesday, Nov. 20, falling, 78-75, to the Texas Tech Red Raiders.
Playing in front of a jammed-packed Moody Coliseum crowd, the Mustangs led by as many as 11 in the first half, but a Tech surge led by Andre Emmett gave the Red Raiders a 43-38 lead at intermission. SMU staged a furious comeback in the game's final five minutes only to come up just short in the in-state battle.
Damon Hancock led SMU in scoring for the third straight game with 23 points, while Quinton Ross and Patrick Simpson added 19 and 11, respectively. Ross also added seven assists while Simpson had a team-high eight boards.
After the game, both coaches commented on the sell-out crowd and the exciting atmosphere.
"It was a great atmosphere tonight in Moody," said SMU Head Coach Mike Dement. "When some of our people tell me what it was like when we were in the old Southwest Conference, I?ll know what it was like."
"It was a heck of a basketball game in a great atmosphere," said Tech Head Coach Bob Knight. "It was jammed-packed. It couldn?t have been better. This (Moody) is a great place to play."
With the win, Tech improves to 3-0, while SMU falls to 2-1.
Next up for the Mustangs is a trip to Waco for their first road game of the season, another in-state showdown with Baylor on Tuesday, Nov. 27.
