SMU Falls In Final Seconds

WACO (SMU) -- The SMU Mustangs dropped a heart-breaking game at the final buzzer on Tuesday, Nov. 27, as the Baylor Bears edged SMU, 92-90, at the Ferrell Center.
Despite trailing by as many as 16 in the second half, the Mustangs staged a furious rally in the game's closing minutes and tied the game at 90-90 on a three-pointer by Billy Pharis with 24 second remaining.
Baylor would have the last shot, though, and the Bears' Lawrence Roberts hit a bucket as the horn sounded to top the Ponies.
Several Mustangs had strong outings, including Damon Hancock, who scored a game-high 26 to go along with six rebounds and five assists. Quinton Ross, the other half of SMU's dynamic duo had 18 points and six blocks, while freshman Eric Castro had a breakout game with 16 points, seven rebounds and three assists.
Fellow frosh Patrick Simpson continued his string of strong outings with a game-high nine rebounds, leading SMU to a commanding 48-29 rebounding edge.
With the win Baylor goes to 4-0, while SMU falls to 2-2.
Next up for the Mustangs is a trip to Iowa, where the Ponies will play in the Gazette Hawkeye Classic, facing LaSalle in the opening round on Friday, Nov. 30, in Iowa City.
