SMU Bests LaSalle

IOWA CITY, Iowa (SMU) -- Eric Castro, Justin Isham and Patrick Simpson, a trio of freshmen, combined to score SMU?s first 23 points of the game, and the Mustangs held off a late rally to best LaSalle, 72-63, in the opening round of the Gazette Hawkeye Challenge.
While SMU?s dynamic duo of Damon Hancock and Quinton Ross combined for only 23 points, 18 below their average, the frosh were outstanding in leading the Ponies to the win.
Simpson finished with the first double-double of his career with 16 points and 10 rebounds, while Castro had 15 points and seven boards. Isham rounded out the threesome with eight points and three boards.
Simpson was 8-of-12 on the night with two assists, two blocks and a steal to add to his performance. Castro was 5-of-7 from the floor and had an amazing five offensive boards.
?I was extremely proud of the way our freshmen played tonight,? said SMU Head Coach Mike Dement after the game. ?They worked very hard on both ends of the court and defended well.?
?I was happy to see some of our guys step up when our ?big two? aren?t playing like they usually do. This was a good win for us over a very good LaSalle team.?
With the win, SMU improves to 3-2 and advances to face No. 7 Iowa in the tourney final on Saturday, Dec. 1 at 8:15 p.m.
