SMU Hoopsters Blast Czech Select

DALLAS(SMU) -- The SMU Mustangs wrapped up their 2001-02 exhibition season in blowout fashion on Wednesday, Nov. 7, by blasting Czech Select, 83-56, at Moody Coliseum.
The Mustangs came out on fire and raced to a 55-32 lead at the break and never looked back in finishing their preseason with a 2-0 mark.
Junior Quinton Ross and sophomore Kris Lowe paced the Ponies with 14 points a piece, while freshman Patrick Simpson and senior Damon Hancock rounded out the Mustangs in double-digits with 11 and 10, respectively. Simpson also had a strong night on the defensive end with two blocks and five boards while Lowe added five steals.
SMU's big men also had impressive evenings, as Nigel Smith posted eight points and seven rebounds in just 19 minutes of play and Jibran Kelley recorded seven points on three-of-four shooting and five boards. Eric Castro, coming off a seven-rebound performance against the EA Sports All-Stars, continued his work on the glass with five caroms, and senior Mike Niemi chipped in with nine points and three boards in just 10 minutes of action.
Despite trailing throughout the game, the Czech team continued to play at a slow pace. "We'll see that style of play this season," SMU Head Coach Mike Dement said after the game. "They reminded me of Princeton, the way they liked to slow it down and try to disrupt your flow."
"We've seen two distinct styles of play in our two games, and that's what exhibitions are for," he continued. "We've played like we needed to play in each game and it's given us a chance to improve."
Next up for the Mustangs is their regular-season opener on Friday, Nov. 16, when SMU hosts Savannah State in a 7:35 p.m. match-up at Moody Coliseum.
