SMU Falls To No. 7 Iowa

IOWA CITY, Iowa (SMU) -- The No. 7 Iowa Hawkeyes and their quartet of seniors topped the SMU Mustangs, 86-69, to win the Gazette Challenge on Saturday, Dec. 1, at Carver Hawkeye Arena.
SMU withstood an early Iowa charge and took the lead in the first half. Iowa would catch fire, however, and storm to a 17-point lead at the break.
After SMU rallied early in the second half to cut the lead to six, Iowa's seniors, Luke Recker, Reggie Evans, Duez Henderson and Ryan Hogan, would take over and proved too much for the youthful Ponies.
Quinton Ross rebounded from a tough opening-round game to net a game-high 24 on 9-of-15 shooting while adding eight boards.
"I thought turnovers were the difference tonight," said SMU Head Coach Mike Dement. "We turned it over 22 times and Iowa outscored us 29-10 on points-off-turnovers."
Following the game, SMU's Ross and Damon Hancock were named to the Hawkeye Challenge All-Tournament team.
With the loss, SMU falls to 3-3, while Iowa goes to 6-2. Up next for SMU is a trip up I-35 to face North Texas in Denton on Dec. 4.
