SMU Rips Oral Roberts, 82-64
Dec 14 | Men's Basketball
DALLAS (SMU) -- Playing without the Western Athletic Conference's leading scorer, Damon Hancock, the SMU Mustangs looked to freshmen Eric Castro and Patrick Simpson to lead the way to an 82-64 win over Oral Roberts at Moody Coliseum.
While Hancock was sidelined with a virus and watched the game from the bench in street clothes, Castro and Simpson were phenomenal, with Castro recording a double-double and Simpson scoring 20 in the win.
"Eric, Justin (Isham) and I made a pact this week that we were going to step it up," said Simpson after the game. "We knew that for this team to be very good, we'd have to play better."
The trio did just that, with Castro tying a career-high with 16 points and more than doubling his previous career-high in rebounds (seven) with 18.
Simpson netted a career-high 20 on 6-of-11 shooting and just missed a double-double with nine boards.
Isham, filling in for Hancock at the point, scored seven and dished out three assists.
SMU dominated the paint, scoring 34 points in the lane to just 18 for ORU while winning the battle of the boards, 46-37.
"I was happy with the way we attacked the interior tonight," said SMU Head Coach Mike Dement. "We moved the ball across their zone well and got some open looks inside and on the perimeter."
With the win, SMU moves to 5-4, while Oral Roberts falls to 2-7. Up next for the Ponies is metroplex rival TCU, as SMU travels to Ft. Worth to face the Horned Frogs on Tuesday, Dec. 18 at 8 p.m.
