Cancun, Mexico -- SMU freshman forward Shonte Roberts (Dallas, Texas) scored a career-high 23 points and added a career-high 11 rebounds to guide the SMU women's basketball team to an 83-65 win over Eastern Michigan Saturday night in the consolation game of the Torneo de Cancun Classic in Cancun, Mexico. With the win, the Mustangs even their record to 5-5 while the Eagles drop their second straight game and fall to 7-3 on the season.
The first half was a see-saw battle, with the lead changing several times. The Mustangs shot 45% from the field in the first half while EMU shot a bit better at 46.4%. SMU went into the halftime intermission down by six points, 38-32.
In the second half, the Mustangs went on a scoring spree, tying a season-best mark with 51 second-half points. SMU's Shonte Roberts had the hot hand, finishing the game going 9-of-13 from the field and recording her first career double-double. As a result of her play, Roberts was SMU's lone representative on the Classic's All-Tournament team.
Junior guard Kenni Patton added 16 points and seven boards while sophomore guard Jackee Brown scored 14 points, including 3-of-6 from three-point range. As a team, SMU shot 47.8% from the field and connected 73.3% of its free throws.
After a short break for the Christmas holiday, the Mustangs open Western Athletic Conference play on the road. SMU faces Fresno State on Dec. 28 and at Nevada on Dec. 30.
