SMU Whips Boise State, 80-67

DALLAS (SMU) -- The SMU Mustangs opened the Western Athletic Conference portion of their 2001-02 season with a win on Friday, Dec. 28, as the Ponies bested Boise State, 80-67, at Moody Coliseum.
After a 10-day holiday layoff, SMU was a little rusty in the opening stanza, going just 11 of 28 from the floor, 1-of-7 from beyond the arc. Stingy defense limited the Broncos' attack, however, and SMU took a 35-31 lead at the break.
The Mustangs rallied in the second half with 62 percent shooting and pulled away for the conference win.
Damon Hancock and Quinton Ross again shouldered the scoring load for SMU as the tandem combined for 52 of the Mustangs' 80 points. Hancock hit for 28, two short of his career high, while Ross' 24 tied his season high.
"It was important for us to get this win," Hancock said after the game. "If you're going to win in this conference, you have to win at home, and tonight we were able to take care of that."
With the win, SMU goes to 6-5, 1-0 in the WAC, while Boise State falls to 6-5, 0-1 in the WAC.
Up next for SMU is UTEP, who visits Moody Coliseum on Sunday, Dec. 30, for a 4:30 p.m. WAC showdown.
