Tennessee Tops SMU

DALLAS (SMU) -- Playing their fifth game in 10 days, a fatigued SMU Mustang squad fell, 79-62, to the Tennessee Volunteers.
The Volunteers jumped out to an 11-2 lead on the Ponies before SMU rallied to take a 17-16 lead at the 11:57 mark of the first half. SMU would have a 24-23 lead with just under nine minutes left in the half before going scoreless for a six-minute stretch, as the Vols took a 46-34 lead at the half.
The Mustangs never challenged in the second half, as the team seemed to lack the energy that it had played with in earlier games.
"We were clearly a tired team tonight," said SMU Head Coach Mike Dement. "We did not have the explosiveness to the ball or the energy level that we've had in our last few games. That's the effect of playing so many games in such a short span."
UT hit 13 of 21 three-point tries on the night and shot 50 percent from the field overall. SMU's 35.5 percent shooting was its worst of the season and the 62 points scored were also a season low.
With the win, Tennessee improves to 4-2, while the Mustangs go to 4-4. Up next for SMU is Oral Roberts, as the Golden Eagles visit Moody Coliseum on Friday, Dec. 14 for a 7:35 p.m. showdown.
