SMU women's tennis player Dee Dee Herring saw her collegiate career come to an end Tuesday morning, as the Fort Worth native lost in the first round of the NCAA Individual Championships being held at the Lincoln Tennis Center in Stone Mountain, Ga.
Herring fell to Southern California's Jewel Peterson, 6-2, 3-6, 6-2. Peterson, ranked No. 28 in the nation, won the first set but Herring, ranked No. 51 nationally bounced back with a strong 6-3 second set win. Peterson put the match away in the third, winning the decisive set 6-2.
The loss ended Herring's season as well as a successful season under first year head coach Beverly Bowes that saw SMU rise as high as the No. 35 ranking the nation, while obtaining 13 wins for the first time since 1989. Herring ended the season with a 23-16 record overall in singles play, giving her 55 career wins, the tenth best total in SMU women's tennis history.
