SMU Announces 2001-02 Hoops Schedule
Aug 13 | Men's Basketball
The SMU men's basketball team will play at least 10 games against teams that reached the postseason in 2001, according to the 2001-02 schedule released Monday, August 13, by Mustang Head Coach Mike Dement.
The Ponies will host 2001 NCAA Tournament participant Tennessee on Dec. 6 in a non-conference contest and will travel to play in the Hawkeye Classic, Nov. 30-Dec. 1, where a match-up with another NCAA Tourney competitor, Iowa, looms in the finals. SMU's non-conference slate also includes games at NIT participant Baylor on Nov. 27 and a visit from Texas Tech and its new coach, Bob Knight, on Nov. 20.
In addition to the non-conference games, SMU will play home-and-home series against all Western Athletic Conference foes, including postseason participants Fresno State, Hawaii, Tulsa and UTEP.
"This is the most difficult schedule that we have had since I've been here," said Dement. "We have some big games at home and were able to maintain some local rivalries."
Dement concluded by saying, "The Tennessee and Texas Tech games are certainly games that our fans will respond to and the WAC will be very competitive."
