DALLAS (SMU) -- Quinton Ross scored 28 points and Bryan Hopkins added 12 points and 10 assists as SMU opened its men's basketball season with a thrilling 87-84 overtime win over metroplex rival TCU on Sunday before 7,102 in Moody Coliseum.
"It was a great way to start the season," said Mustang head coach Mike Dement. "Quinton made a lot of big plays and you saw why Bryan was so highly thought of. He is a winner and is going to be a special player for us."
Ross hit 10-of-20 from the field while Hopkins did not committed a turnover in 35 minutes. Patrick Simpson added 11 points, nine rebounds and four blocks for SMU.
Hopkins put the Mustangs ahead for good at 82-81 with a baseline jumper at the 2:07 mark of overtime. After SMU stopped TCU on its next possession, Hopkins buried a three-pointer from the top of the key to make it 85-81.
Hopkins' free throw with 19 seconds remaining made it 87-84. TCU misfired on three three-point attempts in the final 10 seconds as SMU was able to hang on.
Ross and Hopkins combine for nine of SMU's 12 points in the extra session.
TCU led by nine points at halftime (39-30) and by as many as 10 in the second half (45-35 at the 16:46 mark). The Mustangs countered with with a 13-2 run over the next 4:30 that gave them their first lead since midway through the first half at 48-47.
The lead changed seven times over the final five minutes of regulation as the teams traded baskets. SMU had a chance to win in regulation but Ross missed a 15-foot jumper at the buzzer.
The win snapped a five-game Mustang losing streak to TCU. SMU is in action again on Tuesday night at Texas Tech.
