SMU Falls At Appalachian State

BOONE, N.C. (SMU) -- Behind a 6-of-13 performance from three-point range, Shawn Hall scored a game-high 24 points to lead Appalachian State to an 87-65 victory over the visiting SMU Mustangs.
Appalachian (4-2) shot the lights out against SMU (2-4), netting 57.4 percent from the field, including 12-of-23 (.522) from long range.
Trailing 44-30 at the intermission, SMU narrowed the gap to 12 points on two occasions in the second half. A lay-in by Quinton Ross made it 44-32 with 19:29 remaining. After a Josh Shehan dunk, Ross followed his own miss with a put-back that made it 46-34 with 18:09 left to play.
Appalachian made good on 14-of-24 field goal tries in the second half, including 6-of-11 from the perimeter to maintain a double-digit advantage. After Hall?s final three-pointer of the first half gave ASU a 42-30 lead, it never relinquished a double-digit cushion.
SMU made a final rally and cut the lead to 72-58 with 5:38 remaining on Kris Lowe?s jumper, but, Appalachian went on a 13-2 run to extend its advantage to 85-60 with 1:20 to play.
The Mustangs were paced by Lowe?s 16 points. The Roswell, Ga., product went 7-of-12 from the floor in 23 minutes of action. Ross and Justin Isham each finished with 13 points. Ross registered four steals and Isham was a perfect 3-of-3 from the perimeter. Eric Castro came off the bench to notch 10 points on 5-of-6 shooting.
The Mustangs listed four different players with five rebounds each. Patrick Simpson, Lavardicus Atkins, Isham and Ross each totaled five caroms.
SMU returns home to face Baylor on Saturday, Dec. 21. Tipoff is set for 7:05 p.m.
