DALLAS (SMU) -- The SMU Mustangs snapped a three-game slide in exciting fashion on Saturday, Dec. 21, as the Ponies topped old Southwest Conference foe Baylor, 66-58, in front of 5,075 fans in Moody Coliseum.
Baylor took an early lead in the game but a jumper by Bryan Hopkins at the 8:26 mark of the first half gave SMU the lead and the Ponies never relinquished, going up by as many as 17 in the second stanza.
Sophomore Justin Isham led the Mustangs with a career-high 17 points, while Hopkins added 16. Patrick Simpson paced SMU's efforts on the the glass with a career-high 14 boards in leading the Ponies to a 45-28 rebounding edge.
SMU shot a season-best 46.8 percent from the floor while holding the Bears to just 32.8 percent shooting. With the defensive efforts, the Ponies improved to 60-7 all-time under Coach Mike Dement when holding their opponent to less than 40 percent shooting.
Up next for SMU is a trip to Las Vegas, where the Ponies will face Gardner-Webb and UNLV in the Jim Thorpe Classic, Dec. 28-29.
