Mustangs Defeat Nevada, 58-56

DALLAS (SMU) -- The SMU women's basketball team took the first step in improving its position in the WAC standings with a 58-56 win over Nevada Thursday evening at Moody Coliseum on the campus of SMU. With the win, SMU snaps a four-game winless streak and betters its record to 10-17 overall (5-12 WAC). Nevada loses its third straight game and falls to 9-17 overall (6-11 WAC).

SMU jumped off to a hot start with a 13-point lead at the 11:18 mark in the first half, but Nevada chipped away and capitalized on SMU turnovers. The Wolf Pack cut the lead down to four points (30-26) at the intermission.

In the second half, both teams struggled with turnovers and errant shots. Nevada took its first lead of the game at the 10:16 mark (41-40) from a three-point field goal by Ashley Bastian. The lead would switch back-and-forth until nearly the end of the game. With Nevada holding a one-point lead (56-55) with 55 seconds remaining, junior guard Vanita Krouch hit a short jumper to give the Mustangs a lead (57-56) they would not surrender at the 0:37 mark. On the Nevada possession, SMU's defense toughened up as Katie Golomb missed a three-point field goal, but Bastian collected the offensive rebound and missed her attempt to score. SMU's Kaci Alexander grabbed the defensive rebound and was fouled with two seconds on the clock. Alexander connected on the first free throw to seal the victory.

Sophomore guard Andrea Cossey connected on her second three-point field goal of the night at the 16:00 mark in the second half which gave her 60 treys for the season - an SMU women's record for most three-point field goals in a single season by an individual player.

Sophomore forward Tyesha Glover recorded her fourth double-double of the season with 14 points and a career-high 14 rebounds. Freshman forward Shonte Roberts and Alexander added 10 points each. Nevada's Ashley Bastian led all scorers with 21 points.

SMU closes out the regular season Saturday afternoon with a contest against Fresno State (10-17, 4-13 WAC) at Moody Coliseum. A Mustang win is needed to possibly earn the sixth or seventh seed of the WAC Tournament, which begins March 5.
