DALLAS (SMU) -- The 2001-02 SMU women's golf team awards have been announced by SMU head coach Todd Selders.
The Kyle O'Brien Lady Mustang Most Valuable Player award is shared by senior captain Kelle King and sophomore Missy Ryan. "Throughout the year at each tournament, Kelle and Missy were always right there as one and two in team scoring," states Selders. "They both also had a good WAC tournament."
Recipient of the Most Improved Player award is sophomore Amber Lenz. "Amber went from walk-on status to really helping us feel comfortable in the five position on the team," said Selders. "Her 79 at the WAC Championships helped us shoot one of the lowest rounds of the year."
The Col. Lynn B. Harding Mustang Spirit Award has been awarded to senior Jennifer Gutknecht. "Jennifer kept her senior season very positive as she wanted to make sure her personal goals were met," states Selders. "Her energy and enthusiastic outlook kept the team very upbeat."
In reviewing the past season, Selders states that, "overall, injuries really kept this team from reaching their potential. This graduating class of four seniors will be missed a great deal. It is now time to turn our attention to the future and continue to work on the foundation that was started and carry it forward to the 2002-2003 season."
