SMU Downs Texas Tech In A Thriller, 62-59
Dec 1 | Men's Basketball
DALLAS (SMU) - The SMU Mustangs took an early 14 point lead and rallied from a three-point second-half deficit to top Texas Tech, 62-59, on Monday, Dec. 1, at Moody Coliseum.
SMU jumped on the Red Raiders early, taking a 14-point advantage at 30-16 on a Bryan Hopkins jumper with 7:10 left in the opening frame. Tech rallied back, however, and cut the margin to five at 37-32 at the break.
The Ponies and Red Raiders traded leads in the second half before Hopkins sank two free throws to give SMU the edge for good at 54-53 with 6:48 left. SMU held off a late Tech comeback and captured the victory when Robert Tomaszek's three-pointer came up short at the buzzer.
Hopkins, who was returning to action after missing Saturday's San Diego game to deal with a family emergency, led the Mustangs with 19 points. Juniors Patrick Simpson and Eric Castro also added double-digit efforts with 11 and 10, respectively.
The win was SMU's 26th in a row when limiting an opponent to less than 60 points.
With the win, SMU improves to 2-1, while Tech falls to 4-2. SMU returns to the court on Wednesday, Dec. 3, when the Ponies travel to Waco to take on Baylor.
