WEST LAFAYETTE, IND. (SMU) - Led by senior Kris Lowe's 16 points and eight rebounds, the SMU Mustangs shocked No. 17 Purdue, 60-59, on Sunday, Dec. 21, to win the 2003 Boilermaker Invitational. The win was the first over a ranked team for SMU since a 70-60 win over No. 25 Houston back on Jan. 30, 1993.

Playing their fourth game in seven days, the Ponies used a gritty defensive effort to hand snap Purdue's 21-game win streak in the tournament. With the loss to the Mustangs, Purdue falls to 24-2 all-time in the event with their other loss coming back on Dec. 7, 1991, to Wisconsin-Green Bay, 69-53. The win continued a streak for the Ponies, however, as SMU won its 28th straight when holding an opponent to less than 60 points.

Trailing by six at halftime, SMU battled back in the second half and the two squads traded leads five times in the final 20 minutes. SMU trailed by one in the game's final minute until Bryan Hopkins hit a driving layup with 23 seconds to play to push the final margin to 60-59.

Patrick Simpson added 13 points for SMU while Justin Isham added 11. Eric Castro had nine points and five boards while Donatas Rackauskas chipped in a career-high seven points.

Following the game, Hopkins and Isham were named to the All-Tournament Team. With the win, SMU goes to 5-3 while Purdue, which has a win over Duke this season, falls to 8-2.

Up next for SMU is a trip to Annapolis, Md., where the Ponies will battle Navy on Dec. 31.
