LUBBOCK, TEXAS - Senior running back Keylon Kincade rushed for 93 yards on 29 carries as the SMU Mustangs dropped its season opener, 58-10, Saturday night against Texas Tech in Lubbock, Texas.
SMU had an early 3-0 lead after kicker Chris McMurtray connected on a 42-yard field goal at the 7:38 mark in the first quarter. After Texas Tech tied the game at 3-3 later in the first, the Red Raiders jumped on the back of their running back Taurean Henderson in the second quarter to open up a lead. Henderson scored 21 unanswered points for the Red Raiders in the second quarter to put Texas Tech up 24-3 heading into halftime.
The Red Raiders continued to dominate in the second half, as Texas Tech put 14 more points on the board before SMU stopped its own scoring drought with a nine-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Richard Bartel to wideout Matt Rushbrook. The Pony momentum didn't last long as the Red Raiders added three more scores to finish the game.
Bartel finished the game 21 of 44 for 195 yards passing. Senior Chris Cunningham caught six passes (53 yards) in his first game since December, 2001 to lead the Ponies. Rushbrook hauled in five receptions for 55 yards, while wideout Trey Griffin caught five Bartel passes as well for 43 yards.
The Mustangs return to action on Sept. 13 when they travel to Waco, Texas to take on Baylor. The game is scheduled to kick-off at 6:00 p.m. SMU opens its home schedule Sept. 20 when it hosts Oklahoma State.
