Mustang Swimmers Have Good Showing At American SC Championships

Members of the SMU men's swimming & diving team competed in the American SC Championship this past weekend in Austin, Texas. The competition ran Thursday through Saturday.
On Saturday, SMU got on the board first in the 100 free with a 15th place showing by J.D. White with a time of 45.88. Emilio Garmendia and Ferdi Postma also competed in the finals competition. In the 1,650 free competition Jessen Wabeke and William Balderamos finished sixth and seventh, respectively, in the race. The Mustangs capped the night off with a first place showing in the 400 medley relay with a time of 3:22.67.
Friday's competition was highlighted by the performance of the Mustang 200 free relay team that won the event with a time of 1:20.43. In the 200 fly, the Mustangs had three competitors, Ferdi Postma, Justin Smith and Richard Hampson, finish in the top 20 on the night. In the 50 free, Camilo Becerra and Per Nylin finished third and fourth, respectively. Alan Antillon recorded a fifth place time of 2:02.45 in the 200 breast, while Eric Hadley also finished fifth in the 100 back with a time of 49.72.
Freshman Ian Clark stole the show Thursday by winning the 400 IM race with a time of 3:50.34. Teammate Justin Smith finished second with a time of 3:55.80 in the event. Camilo Becerra finished second in the 100 fly with a time of 47.66. In the 100 breast, Per Nylin also finished second, recording a time of 55.09 in the event. Ferdi Postma added to the highly successful night for the Ponies with a third place time of 1:38.49 in the 200 free. SMU also won the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:29.65 on the night as well.
The Mustangs now prepare for the NCAA Championships, held Mar. 25-27 in New York City, N.Y.
