El Paso, Texas - The SMU women's soccer team handed the UTEP miners a 2-1 defeat Friday evening in El Paso, Texas. With the win, SMU improves to 9-4-1 on the season (3-1 C-USA) while the Miners fall for the first time this season and now post a record of 14-1-1 (3-1-1 C-USA).
After a scoreless first half, the Mustangs got on the scoreboard first at the 73:16 mark as freshman Gillian Field scored the goal in traffic after the UTEP goalkeeper deflected the ball. SMU added the eventual game-winner at the 77:02 mark as sophomore Kimber Bailey beat Miner goalkeeper Brittany Popoff after a long run and notched her 13th goal of the season. The Miners cut the lead to 2-1 at the 79:35 mark when Cara Nordin scored on a 35-yard direct kick.
The Mustangs outshot the Miners, 16-12. Mustang netminder Ashley Gunter totaled three saves.
SMU heads to College Station, Texas, for a Sunday matinee vs. Tulane. Kick-off is slated for 1:00 p.m.
