DALLAS (SMU) - The SMU women's swimming and diving team dropped a close dual meet with Florida on Thursday, 125-118, at Perkins Natatorium in a match-up between NCAA top-10 teams from a year ago. Four Mustangs won individual events on the evening, with Flavia Rigamonti and Candace Blackman each winning two. Rigamonti touched the wall first in the 500-yard freestyle (4:49.91) and 1000-yard freestyle (9:51.24), while Blackman won the 100- (50.31) and 200-yard freestyle (1:47.43).
The teams split the relays events as Florida won the 400-yard medley relay in 3:43.74 to open the evening. The Mustangs closed out the night, edging the Gators by one second in the 400-yard freestyle relay, with a time of 3:23.69.
Anja Carman finished first in her signature event, the 200-yard backstroke, winning by nearly two seconds, with a time of 1:58.49. Carman also put the pressure on Rigamonti in the 1000 free, but came up just short finishing second in 9:52.28. Laura Pomeroy (23.53) and Leane Darling also helped boost SMU's score when they (23.76) finished one-two in the 50-yard freestyle. On the evening SMU won seven of the 13 events.
Head coach Steve Collins was very impressed with his team's opening performance and looks forward to the SMU Women's Swimming Classic this weekend.
"We were very impressive tonight," Collins said. "We went up against a great team and after the first few events the team realized they could win this meet and I was really pleased to see that. Even thought we came up just short, I think we showed we are a great team too and we are excited about these next two days."
