DALLAS (SMU) - The SMU women's tennis team wrapped up competition in the 2005 Wilson/Intercollegiate Tennis Association Southwest Women's Regional Championships on Monday at the George P. Mitchell Tennis Center in College Station, Texas. After dropping her first main draw match to advance to the consolation bracket, Jen Chay went on to make the consolation finals before falling to Tara Browning of Texas Tech (6-2, 6-4).
Svetlana Kouzmenko won her opening round match over Brianna Bateup of Houston (6-2, 6-0) to advance to the round of 32, before falling to Helena Besovic (6-1, 6-4) of TCU. Kristen Reid and Natalia Bubien also saw action for SMU, both dropping their opening round matches.
In doubles action, Reid and Chay made the round of 32 before bowing out, while the duos of Brooke and Halley Rambally and Kouzmenko/Bubien both dropped their opening round matches to advance to the consolation bracket. In the consuls, the Ramballys reached the quarterfinals, before falling to Seamen/Tucker (8-4) from LSU. Kouzmenko and Bubien also made the quarterfinals, but then withdrew due to injury.
The singles finalists and doubles champion from this event will earn spots in the November 3-6 ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships hosted by The Ohio State University at the Racquet Club of Columbus. The ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships feature a 32-player singles field and 16-team doubles field for men and women, including: qualifiers from these Wilson/ITA Regional Championships held across the country, the ITA National Small College champions, top performers from the ITA All-American Championships and at-large card selections made by the ITA National Tournament Committee. Overall, more than 7,000 players from nearly 600 schools participate annually in the ITA Regional and National Intercollegiate Championships.
The ITA Southwest Regionals were the last event on the women's tennis team's fall schedule. The team returns to action on Friday, Jan. 21, when they travel to Waco, Texas, to begin the spring season. SMU will host 12 home dual meets this spring at Haggar Tennis Stadium and will serve as host to the 2006 C-USA Women's Tennis Championships, Apr. 20-23.
