GREENVILLE, N.C. (SMU) - The SMU volleyball team battled back from an 0-2 deficit to defeat East Carolina 3-2 (21-30, 17-30, 31-29, 30-23, 15-9) on Friday night at Minges Coliseum in Greenville, N.C. The Mustangs (11-11, 7-3 C-USA) were one point away from being swept by the Pirates, but rallied to win the last four points in game three to stay alive and went on to win the match. With the come from behind win, SMU returned to .500 for the first time in six weeks and extended their winning streak to five matches.
Rachel Giubilato recorded her league-leading 17th double-double and led SMU in both kills and digs, totaling 18 and 17 respectively. Caitlin Rainbird (14 kills and 11 digs) and Kelly Larkan (17 kills and 11 digs) also posted double-doubles for the Mustangs. Freshman Natalie Peters was the fourth SMU player to notch double-digit kills, collecting 14, and led the team with five blocks.
Stephanie Bennett led SMU with a .417 hitting percentage on six kills and one error in 12 attempts. Stefanie Kons directed the offense with 54 assists, while Madison Hill added six. Libero Jennette Evanco chipped in with 11 digs.
The SMU volleyball team returns to the court Sunday afternoon when they clash with C-USA leader Marshall at 12 p.m. CT.
