DALLAS (SMU) - The SMU women's basketball team rediscovered its shooting touch Wednesday night and defeated cross-town rival UTA by the score of 67-58 at Moody Coliseum on the campus of SMU. With the win, SMU evens its record to 3-3 while the Mavericks fall to 1-2 on the young season.
SMU got off to another slow start, down by 10 points (17-7) at the 10:59 mark, but SMU disrupted the Maverick full-court press and chipped away at its deficit. The Mustangs went 15-of-18 from the free throw line in the first half, and shot 45.8% from the field. SMU went into intermission with a 39-28 lead - its first halftime lead of the season.
In the second half, SMU poured it on early, increasing its lead to as many as 22 points (58-36) at the 11:03 mark. But the Mavericks hit a few three-pointers and cut the lead at a steady pace. SMU shot nearly 53% from the field in the second half, but collected 11 turnovers as well. SMU struggled in the offensive rebound category, recording eight offensive boards compared to UTA's 18.
The game's top scorer was UTA's Terra Wallace with 20 points. Four Mustangs scored in double digits, led by Sarah Davis with 11 points. Sharee Shepherd, Janielle Dodds, and Juli Colli each added 10 points for SMU.
In its final game before exams, SMU takes on North Texas Saturday in Denton. Gametime is slated for 5:00 p.m.
