DALLAS (SMU) - The No. 8 SMU women's swimming and diving team topped No. 9 Texas on Friday night, 162-138, at Perkins Natatorium on the SMU campus. SMU took an early lead over Texas by winning six of the first seven events and won nine of 16 events overall to take the dual meet from the Longhorns. Sophomore Candace Blackman continued to dominate in the sprint free events, winning both the 100 free (50.89) and 200 free (1:48.31) to help the Mustangs take out the Longhorns.
SMU's 200 medley relay teams finished first and third to open the meet and helped the team jump out to a 13-4 lead. Flavia Rigamonti (9:48.80) and Anja Carman (9:51.89) helped SMU double their team score after the 1000 free when they finished one-two and pushed the lead to 26-10. Blackman just out-touched her sister Jennifer (1:50.75) in the next event, the 200 free, and Celina Lemmen (1:51.83) was just behind the siblings in third.
Freshman Jenny Basel won her first collegiate heat when she touched the wall first in the 100 breast (1:04.17), just ahead of teammate Tamara Sambrailo (1:04.73). Carman claimed first in the 200 fly (2:01.89) and Laura Pomeroy (23.45) and Leane Darling (23.70) finished one-two in the 50 free.
The Mustangs also took the top three spots in the 100 free and finished at Nos. 2, 4 and 5 in the 200 back. Rigamonti won her second heat of the meet when she touched first in the 500 free (4:49.66).
In diving events, Kristin Schild finished fourth in both the one- (257.92) and three-meter (270.60) diving competitions, while Christina Hussong placed fifth in each event.
SMU closed out the event with a dominating performance in the 400 free relay. The team of Darling, Pomeroy, Roxane Akradi and Jennifer Blackman touched in 3:24.45, nearly three seconds ahead of the Longhorns.
The SMU women's swimming and diving team returns to the pool Nov. 18-20, when they travel to College Station, Texas, to participate in the Texas A&M Invitational.
