Women's Swimmers Compete at European Short Course Championships

TRIESTE, Italy (SMU) - Head women's swim coach Steve Collins led four Mustang swimmers to the 2005 European Short Course Championships in Trieste, Italy, Dec. 9-11. Current Mustangs Anja Carman, Flavia Rigamonti and Tamara Sambrailo, along with former SMU great Martina Moravcova all had solid performances and represented the university well.
Sambrailo participated in consolation heats of the 50m and 200m breast, while Carman swam consolation heats in the 100m and 200m back. Five-time NCAA Champion Flavia Rigamonti finished the 800m free in 8:20.32, good for a third-place finish. Carman also saw action in the 800m free, taking 12th in 8:33.40.
Moravcova, a four-time Olympian and two-time Olympic silver medalist, added another Gold to her collection of 29 European medals (19-7-3). On the last day of competition, Moravcova won her 6th straight gold medal in the 100m butterfly (58.19; 7 overall). During her collegiate career at SMU, she became the second winningest female swimmer in NCAA history with 10 individual and 4 team NCAA titles.
The Ponies have a break for the holidays before returning to the pool, facing No. 1 Georgia in Athens on Saturday, Jan. 7.
