Washington D.C. - Despite a strong first half, the SMU women's basketball team could not contain George Washington's hot shooters in the second half and fell to the Colonials by the score of 76-58 Tuesday evening in Washington, D.C. The Mustang loss was the second one in as many games. SMU now posts a record of 3-5 while George Washington improves to 4-3 on the season.
SMU found itself down early, 4-0, but went on a 7-0 run to claim the lead. Sophomore Janielle Dodds totaled 16 points and grabbed eight rebounds in the first half. The Mustangs shot 44% in the first half while holding the Colonials to 34.3% shooting. At halftime, the score was tied, 33-33.
The second half was all GW to start, going on a 12-4 run to open the half. SMU turned the ball over numerous times, giving the Colonials fast-break opportunities and easy buckets. Midway through the half, GW went on a 12-0 run in a four-minute span and extended its lead to as many as 16 points. Three-pointers by Jennifer Colli and Katie Gross cut the lead to nine points late but the Colonials kept up the defensive pressure and scored easy baskets.
Dodds finished the game with a team-high 22 points and 12 rebounds for her fifth double-double of the season. Sarah Davis added 14 points for the Mustangs. GW's Kimberly Beck posted a game-high 23 points, including 4-of-4 from three-point range. Sarah-Jo Lawrence contributed 21 points for the Colonials.
SMU closes out its two-game road swing with a contest at Liberty Friday evening. Tip-off is slated for 6:00 p.m. CT and will be broadcast live on KKGM-Radio (1630 AM).
