DALLAS (SMU) - The SMU women's basketball team fell to area rival TCU Tuesday evening by the score of 79-68. The loss extends the Mustangs' winless streak to four games while the Lady Frogs snap a three-game losing streak. SMU now posts a record of 3-7 while TCU improves to 3-5.
In the first half, SMU was hot from three-point range, hitting 7-of-14 behind the arc. Junior Katie Gross connected on five treys and recorded 15 points in the first half. The Mustangs tallied as big of a lead as 14 points at the 10:25 mark, but TCU slowly and effectively chipped away at the lead, closing the gap to 38-37 at halftime.
In the second half, TCU stepped up its defensive pressure and held the Mustangs' three-point shooting in check, allowing only two treys on eight attempts in the second half. The Lady Frogs capitalized on 11 SMU second-half turnovers, scoring 13 points off those turnovers. The Mustangs shot 44% from the field in the second half, but could not slow down TCU, who shot 50% in the second half.
SMU's top scorer was Katie Gross who finished with 22 points and seven rebounds, tying a career mark with six three-point field goals. Senior Sarah Davis added 11 points. TCU was led by Lorie Butler-Rayford who posted a team-high 17 points while Natasha Lacy and Vanessa Clementino each added 14 points.
SMU continues its homestand with a contest vs. UC-Irvine Thursday night at Moody Coliseum. Tip-off is slated for 7:00 p.m. and will be broadcast live on KXYZ-Radio (1360 AM).
