SMUMustangs.com staff caught up with former Pony great Kevin Garrett recently to find out what the former SMU defensive back has been up to since he left the Hilltop.
1. Since college, what have you been up to professionally?
I am entering my third season with the St. Louis Rams. It has been a great experience. I have seen things and met people that I probably wouldn't have the chance to do if I wasn't in the league. It's been great.
2. Where are you living now?
Right now I have dual residence in St. Louis during the season and back home in the Brazoria area (near Houston) during the off-season.
3. What are your plans for the rest of the summer and this fall with the Rams?
Well, we report for training camp on July 27. I've been working out most of the off-season getting ready for the '05 season. Right now (early July) I am in my little window of off-time. I've been to Puerto Rico, The Bahamas, New Orleans, and Texas. I've worked hard this off-season and have enjoyed my little window of time away. I'll be ready to get back to it on the 27th.
4. Have you been able to keep up with the Ponies?
Every now and then, I get information from other former players or from off the internet. I wish them the best of luck for the upcoming season. I think Conference USA will be good for the entire program.
5. What do you miss most about being on the Hilltop?
The college atmosphere. There is really nothing like a good college atmosphere no matter where you attend school. SMU was great. I have lots of friends I made while I was there. It has prepared me well for the future and I miss being there.
6. What is the biggest difference between the college game and football in the NFL?
Everything is more detailed oriented. Everyone you are competing against has skill and talent. It's the details you learned growing up that really are key.
When I first got to St. Louis, I was lucky to have some veterans that helped me make the transition. Aeneas Williams helped me tremendously make the transition. Also, my coaches have been invaluable. They really help with stressing the details. It really can separate you in the league.
