Women's Swimmers Compete at Fina World Championships

DALLAS (SMU) - Head women's swim coach Steve Collins led five current and former SMU swimmers to the XI Fina World Championships in Montreal, Quebec, Canada July 24-31. Former Mustang great Martina Moravcova (Slovakia) headlined the group and was accompanied by Anja Carman (Slovenia), Tamara Sambrailo (Slovenia), Celina Lemmen (Netherlands) and Flavia Rigamonti (Switzerland). The ladies represented SMU well as Moravcova and Rigamonti each swam in event finals.
Rigamonti won silver for Switzerland in the 1500 free, touching the wall in 16:04.34 and just missed her second medal of the event when she finished fourth in the 800 free in 8:28.74. Moravcova claimed seventh place in the 100 fly for Slovakia, finishing in 59.25. She also participated in preliminary events in the 50 fly and 50 and 100 free.
Carman participated in the prelims of the 100 and 200 back and 400 free, Sambrailo swam in the 50, 100 and 200 breast prelims, while Lemmen was a member of the 4 x 200 free relay prelims.
The SMU women's swimming & diving team will open the 2005-06 season with the 12th Annual Women's Swimming and Diving Classic in October. The Mustangs will be looking to defend last year's Classic title and are also seeking their 10th straight conference title and their first as a member of Conference USA.
