DURHAM, N.C. (SMU) - The SMU volleyball team fell to the Charlotte 49ers 3-1 (30-27, 24-30, 30-27, 30-24) on Saturday in the 2005 Duke Invitational in Durham, N.C. Rachel Giubilato led the Mustangs (4-5) with 20 kills and 14 digs. Caitlin Rainbird also had a double-double with 12 kills and 21 digs in the loss. Giubilato added three service aces and set an SMU record for attack attempts in a four-game match with 71, while notching five blocks. Giubilato's blocks contributed to SMU's 15 blocks as a team.
Senior Ashley Zener hit .500 for the contest with seven kills on 14 swings and also added 10 blocks. This was Zener's second double-digit block performance of the season and her total tied for the third-best all-time in a four-game match. Fellow senior Kelly Larkan tallied 14 digs, seven kills and four blocks for SMU, while Natalie Peters had 12 kills and hit .360 to go along with five blocks. Madison Hill also recorded a double-double with 50 assists and 14 digs. Hill also had four blocks. Jennette Evanco also contributed with 15 digs.
The Mustangs open Conference USA action this Tuesday, Sept. 13, when they host Tulsa at 7 p.m. at Moody Coliseum. The match will have live stats available via game tracker and live video through Mustang All-Access on SMUMustangs.com.
