ATHENS, Ga. (SMU) - SMU senior Philip Griffin placed seventh in three-meter diving on day one of the Georgia Diving Invitational & Shootout at the Gabrielsen Natatorium.

Griffin scored 323.85 in the preliminaries, before scoring 284.50 in the finals. He just missed out on the six-man shootout scheduled for later Friday. Casey Markham, SMU's only other competitor, netted 198.90 in the preliminaries and missed the finals.

Teams competing in the Invitational & Shootout are Virginia Tech, Houston, Purdue, Alabama, Drexel, SMU, East Carolina, North Carolina, Kansas, Pittsburgh, Kentucky, Auburn and LSU. There are 44 women and 31 men competing in a format similar to the NCAA Zone B and NCAA Championships.

The event runs through Sunday.
