The SMU Mustangs edged UAB tonight, 3-0 (30-21, 30-20, 31-29). SMU advances to 12-10 on the season and 3-5 in Conference USA play. Caitlin Rainbird posted her 11th double-double performance of the season.
Rainbird posted a double-double performance with 15 kills and 12 digs, also notching five blocks. Stefanie Kons directed the offense posting 44 assists on the night and eight digs. Kons matched her career-high record for the total of assists in three games. Kara Cornelius added four kills and two blocks while Kendra Kahanek notched double-digits with 12 kills. Natalie Peters had seven kills and a season-high of eight blocks while Rachel Giubilato posted 10 kills and nine digs. Madison Hill compiled seven digs while Candice Davis notched 15 digs.
In game one, UAB took the first lead but the Mustangs took over at 7-7. SMU posted a four-point series to take the lead and then continued posting series of unanswered points, soaring to a, 30-21, win over UAB in game one. The Mustangs held UAB to .021 attack percentage while SMU posted .191 with 16 kills.
SMU never let UAB get close in game two as they held and maintained the lead throughout the whole game. The Mustangs notched 19 kills in game two for a percentage of .375 while holding UAB to .154 percentage and taking the, 30-20, win.
UAB tried to come out with a spark in game three, but the Mustangs drenched any spark UAB attempted to start. There were 10 ties in the final game as UAB tried to slide to the win, late in the game as they tied the score at, 20-20, and then continued in the lead. The Mustangs sustained a fierce battle at the net complemented by UAB errors as the teams tied the score and then SMU took the lead. The Ponies made the fatal blow as Peters and Rainbird put down a solid block for the, 31-29, win. SMU compiled 14 kills for an attack percentage of .333 in game three.
The Mustangs continue their C-USA road trip as they head to Memphis for a 1:00 p.m. match on Sunday.
