SHERVEPORT, La. (SMU) - The No. 20 SMU men's swimming and diving team upended Centenary today, 134-122. The Mustangs finished first in 11 of the 14 total events.
Opening the meet with the 200 medley relay, the Mustang relay team clocked in four seconds faster than Centenary. Ian Clark, Jerr Merritt, Maverick Smalley and Shane Milu combined for a time of 1:35.98. In the 1000 free, Chris Ginder coasted into first-place with a time of 9:54.13 while Justin Smith raced to a first-place finish in the 200 free, clocking in at 1:46.03. Travis Callaghan put up a time of 1:49.55 in the 200 free for a fourth-place finish.
Pontus Renholm and Colton Ingraham dominated in the 100 back as Renholm notched first-place with a time of 50.98 and Ingraham came in second with a time of 55.47. The Mustangs took the top two spots in the next event as well. Grega Plevelj clocked in at 1:00.49 for first-place in the 100 breast and Patrick Raschle took second-place with a time of 1:02.87. Matthew Hock clocked in for a sixth-place finish with a time of 1:05.97.
Nathan Clark out touched his opponents by almost three seconds in the 200 fly for a first-place finish and a time of 1:56.72. Brett Denham finished fourth-place with a time of 2:02.28 while Josh Cohen finished sixth with a time of 2:07.06. SMU went one, two, and three in the 50 free with Hetland leading the way. He clocked in a 21.19 while Merritt finished second with a time of 22.32 and Jani Brackett rounded out the top three with a time of 22.33.
Smith took the win the 100 free with a time of 48.88 and Renholm followed with another first-place finish in the 200 back with a time of 1:52.97. Plevelj touched the wall at 2:19.27 in the 200 breast for a second-place finish and Hock took the fourth-place finish with a time of 2:28.20. In the 500 free, Clark notched another Mustang first-place finish with a time of 4:44.28. Cohen clocked in a 55.45 in the 100 fly for a second-place finish.
Smalley touched the wall almost seven seconds faster than anyone else in the 200 IM as he clocked a time of 1:54.03. In the final event of the meet, the Mustangs came in second in the 200 free relay. Clark, Cohen, Hock and Smith clocked in for a time of 1:30.17.
The Mustangs will return home to host BYU on Nov. 3 at 6:00 p.m. in the Perkins Natatorium on the campus of SMU.
