Mustangs Trample UTEP, 3-2

The Mustangs trampled over UTEP today, 3-2 (17-30, 30-25, 20-30, 34-32, 15-10) as several Mustangs had double-double performances. SMU is now 11-10 over all and 2-5 in Conference USA play.

Freshman Kendra Kahanek posted her first double-double of her career as she nailed down two career-highs. She posted 20 kills and 11 blocks. Caitlin Rainbird also had a double-double performance as she posted 16 kills and 17 digs. Rachel Giubilato made a double-double with 20 kills, 20 digs and added five blocks on the night while Natalie Peters compiled 14 kills and six blocks. Jenny Reyes made one kill and nine digs for the Mustangs and Kara Cornelius added two kills and three blocks. Dominique Ouellette made two digs while Candice Davis was just one away from her career-high in digs as she posted 31 for the night. Madison Hill directed the offense with 57 assists, two kills, nine digs and four blocks. Adrienne Zielasko had two blocks and Stefanie Kons made one kill and five assists for the night.

The Mustangs came out to slow start as UTEP sailed to a, 30-17, win in game one. SMU came out in the second game, taking the first lead but then the teams continued to battle for lead. UTEP took over late in the game, but the Mustangs rallied back late posting the four-point series to take the, 30-25, win. Like game one, UTEP took off from the start in game three as the Mustangs could not slow down their momentum. The Miners won, 30-20.

The Mustangs won the long battle in game four. UTEP took the early lead, but the Mustangs battled back. The last half of the game, both teams tried to stay on top but it was SMU who ended up putting the winning series together as they took the, 34-32, win. There were four early ties in game five, but the Mustangs continued to break-away. SMU put up five late unanswered points to help take the, 15-10, win.

The Mustangs continue on the road as they take on UAB, Oct. 13 at 7:00 p.m. and Memphis on Oct. 15 at 1:00 p.m.
