No. 7 Mustangs Look To Make Splash At US Open

DALLAS (SMU) - Seven members of the No. 7 SMU women's swimming and diving team are competing at the US Open this weekend at West Lafayette, Ind. On the campus of Purdue University at the Boilermaker Aquatics Center, the meet will begin on Nov. 30 and last through Dec. 2. Former Mustang stand-outs, Martina Moravcova and Flavia Rigamonti will also be competing.
This year's U.S. Open is the last of its kind as next year it becomes the World Long-Course Meter Championships. In its final chapter, the three-day, six-session meet will feature 943 athletes including 21 Olympians. The roster of Olympic stars is an impressive one as it boasts Katie Hoff, Amanda Weir, Lenny Krayzelburg, Tara Kirk and Michael Phelps.
On day one, Anja Carman will start for the Mustangs with the 400 free where she is seeded 25th as Tamara Sambrailo will race next in the 100 breast with a No. 20 seeding. Carman will then race in her second event of the day, as she is seeded 11th in the 200 back. In the 50 free, Mustang alumni Martina Moravcova is seeded third while current members, Angela San Juan Cisneros and Petra Klosova were placed at number 12 and 19 respectively. Michelle Vlasakova and Celina Lemmen will also compete in the 50 free.
The second day with begin with Carman in the 100 back followed by Lemmen, Klosova and Carman in the 200 free. Former Mustang, Flavia Rigamonti will also race in the 200 free. With a number three seeding, Moravcova will race in the 100 fly as well as San Juan Cisneros and Justine Clark at No. 10 and 11, respectively.
On the final day, Carman will again swim first for the Mustangs as she takes a No. 30 seeding in the 800 free. A specialist in distant free races, Rigamonti will also compete in the 800 free. The 100 free will see five Mustangs in the waters. Moravcova leads with a No. 2 seed as Klosova has a No. 10 seeding and San Juan Cisneros, Lemmen and Vlasakova also have earned lanes. Competing in the 200 breast, Sambrailo takes a No. 22 seed and Clark will wrap up the night for the Mustangs as she will compete in the 200 fly.
Results will be available after the evening sessions.
