HELSINKI, Finland (SMU) - On the third day of competition at the European Short Course Championships, the Mustangs continued to set the steady pace to new waters.
Today, Alex Hetland of the SMU men's swimming and diving team competed in two events. He started off the morning with a great finish in the 50 breast as he tied for second with a time of 27.34. Hetland qualified for the semi-finals but elected not to continue in this event but instead focus on his best event, the 100 IM.
Focusing on the 100 IM is just what Hetland did as posted the fastest time in the prelims of 54.23. This qualified him as the top seed going into the semi-finals which he then won his heat with a new Norwegian National record time of 53.87. The time broke his own national record by two-tenths of a second and advanced him to the finals in the second position behind championship record-holder, Peter Mankoc. Hetland will be looking for his first European Championship medal as he will participate in the finals of the 100 IM tomorrow night.
Luka Vrtovec had the day off but will return to the blocks tomorrow morning in the 50 fly.
