DALLAS (SMU) - The SMU women's basketball team improved to 6-2 on the season with a 70-53 victory over regional rival North Texas Saturday evening at Moody Coliseum on the campus of SMU. With the loss, North Texas drops to 2-6 on the season.
In the first half, SMU held the Mean Green to an opponent-low 21 points. SMU shot 35.5% from the field while North Texas struggled, hitting only 22.2% from the field, including 0-of-7 from three-point range. The Mustangs took advantage of North Texas' 14 first-half turnovers, recording 15 points off of those turnovers and went into intermission with a 31-21 lead.
In the second half, North Texas fought back after being down by 12 at the 18:02 mark (37-25), but the Mustangs went on a 6-0 run during a two-minute span and increased their lead to 16 points (49-33) at the 12:59 mark. SMU slowly continued to keep North Texas out of reach, scoring inside the paint and hitting outside shots. The Mustangs shot 50% from the field in the second half compared to North Texas' 39.4%.
Four Mustangs scored in double figures, led by junior post Janielle Dodds who turned in her third double-double of the season with 11 points and a season-best 13 rebounds. Junior guard Sharee Shepherd topped the game's scorers with 16 points and five steals. Guard Katy Cobb added 14 points while Jillian Samuels pumped in 12 points and added four steals. Sanetra Jackson scored 12 points for North Texas.
SMU heads to Fayetteville, Ark., for a game against the Arkansas Lady Razorbacks (9-1) Wednesday night. Tip-off is slated for 7:00 p.m.
