DALLAS (SMU) - The SMU women's basketball team has quite a bit at stake this weekend with this being the final weekend of the regular season. It all begins Friday evening as the Mustangs (14-12, 9-5 C-USA) hosts the UTEP Miners (14-12, 6-8 C-USA) at Moody Coliseum. Tip-off is slated for 7:00 p.m. and the game will be broadcast on KKGM-Radio (1630 AM).
SMU is hoping to secure one of the top four places in the final league standings and earn a first-round tournament bye. Currently in a tie for second place, the Mustangs look to avenge an 80-69 loss at UTEP on Jan. 8. UTEP is coming off a 77-63 win over Marshall in El Paso.
Friday's meeting marks the 19th meeting between SMU and UTEP. The Mustangs hold a 14-4 series edge over the Miners. SMU has won the last three meetings in Dallas - the last time (and only time) SMU lost to UTEP at Moody Coliseum took place on Jan. 3, 2002, by the score of 76-73.
Congratulations to Sarah Davis who eclipsed the 1,000-point mark on a three-pointer with 12:30 remaining in Sunday's game at Houston. She is the 14th Mustang women's player to reach that total.
Sophomore post Janielle Dodds already totals 834 career points and 460 career rebounds (through Sunday, Feb. 19). Dating back to last season, she has scored in double figures in 26 of the last 30 games (held to single-digit points at Liberty, vs. Sam Houston State, and at Marshall in 2005-06). Janielle totals 10 double-doubles this season.
Junior Katie Gross' 53 three-point field goals this season is tied for the third-most recorded in the SMU record books. The season record is 68 treys by Andrea Cossey, which she totaled twice during her career (2001-02, 2002-03).
