COLLEGE STATION (SMU)- The SMU women's golf team stands in a fourth-place tie after the opening round of the 13th-annual Texas A&M "Mo"Morial Invitational at the par-72, 6,307-yard Traditions Golf Club. As a team, SMU shot 317 and is tied with UTEP at 29-over. Host and 20th-ranked Texas A&M leads the tournament at 18-over 306.
Kristina Rothengatter leads the Mustangs and is tied for second overall at 2-over 74. She is two shots back of leader Jullianne Kim of UTEP. Kate Ackerson is tied for 23rd at 7-over 79, while Lacey Jones is in 41st at 9-over 81. SMU's returning first-team All-Conference golfers, Laura Cross and Jennifer Ackerson, are in 53rd at 11-over 83 and in 70th at 14-over 86, respectively. SMU's Ashley Deatherage, playing as an individual, shot a 15-over 87 and is tied for 79th.
In addition to SMU and A&M, the 18-team field includes No. 9 Arkansas, No. 23 Kent State, Baylor, Missouri, Tulsa, Oregon State, Kansas State, Oklahoma, Wisconsin, Kansas, TCU, Notre Dame, Nebraska, UTEP, Iowa State and Redlands Community College.
SMU edged A&M by one stroke to capture last year's title.
The 54-hole event continues through the weekend with 18 holes set for both Saturday and Sunday.
