WILMINGTON, N.C. (SMU) – SMU women's golf lead the field after one round of the Landfall Tradition at Country Club of Landfall's Pete Dye Course.
 
Fresh off a second place finish their last time out, the Mustangs faced off against a loaded field at the Landfall Tradition, the final event on the fall calendar. Twelve teams in the field are ranked in the top 50 and six are ACC programs. The Mustangs bested all of them in round one with a one under score. Sitting in first place, the Mustangs have a one stroke lead over second place North Carolina and Kentucky. Three Mustangs played the day at par or better against a tough setup that only saw 21 golfers below par.

"The greens are only about four weeks old, so everyone in the field is getting some interesting bounces — having to adjust and even play away from certain pins is tough," said head coach Lauren Mason. "Really proud of the way our ladies responded, adjusting on the fly and keeping a great attitude through the challenges.

"Our ladies have put us in a great position. Looking forward to getting after it again tomorrow."

 
Celine Chen and Grace Jin lead the way for SMU at one-under. They are both tied for 14^th. Chen excelled on holes 10 through 18 with a 33 score. She birdied four times on the back nine. The junior totaled six birdies throughout the day on her way to a 71. Jin's best round as a Mustang was highlighted with an eagle on the par 484 yard 12^th hole. She also birdied two of the final four holes to finish at 71.
 
Emily Odwin carded par or better for the sixth time in nine rounds this season. She shot a 72 to sit in a tie for 22^nd. She played her final 11 holes bogey free.
 
Mackenzie Lee sits one shot back at one-over par after a 73 in round one. Lee used back-to-back birdies on No. 5 and No. 6 to vault her up the leaderboard. Uma Bergner shot a 77 to sit in a tie for 68^th.

Looking for their first tournament title of the season, the Mustangs head back to the course for round two on Saturday. They will be paired alongside golfers from Kentucky and North Carolina at 9:09 am ET / 8:09 am CT.
