ATHENS, Georgia (SMU) - The No. 9 women's swimming team wrapped up day one of the NCAA Championships in Athens, Georgia along with 31 other teams. Twelve SMU swimmers qualified for about three events a-piece at the NCAAs. After day one, the Mustangs are in 9th place.
After the preliminary heats about mid-day, the swimmers returned at 7 p.m. for finals. The 200 yard freestyle relay started the day and the SMU team consisted of Laura Pomeroy, Petra Klosova, Leane Darling and Candace Blackman. The relay placed fifth with a time of 1:30.48, which is the fastest time this season for that relay. Arizona won the race with a time of 1:27.98 which set new records all across the boards.
Flavia Rigamonti placed sixth in the 500 yard freestyle with a time of 4:42.69. The event was won by Laura Conway who set a pool record of 4:40.01. SMU's Anja Carman swam a season best for 14th place with a time of 4:46.79 while Katie Roberts placed 16th with a time of 4:49.57.
In the 200 yard individual medley, Jenny Basel swam a time of 2:03.90 in the prelims. In the next event, Pomeroy tied for 11th in the 50 free with time of 22.76 Candace Blackman raced for a time of 22.87in the prelims while Klosova also swam in the prelims with a time of 23.08. Leane Darling swam a time of 23.23, Jennifer Blackman a time of 23.64 and Celina Lemmen a time of 23.66, all in prelims.
Day two will resume Friday, March 17 at 11 a.m. with the 200 yard medley relay, 400 yard IM, 10 yard butterfly, 200 yard freestyle, 100 yard breaststroke, 100 yard backstroke and will wrap up with the three-meter diving. The teams will return to the pool at 7 p.m. for finals, all in the same order.
