ATLANTA (SMU) - The SMU men's swimming & diving team is off to a strong start at the NCAA Championships, standing in 19th place following the first night of competition. Highlighting Thursday's sessions for the Mustangs were Philip Griffin in one-meter diving and the 200 free and 400 medley relays.
In the afternoon session, Griffin earned a 13th-place finish on the one-meter springboard with a score of 290.85, netting the Ponies four points from his performance.
On the swimming side, SMU got off to a good start as its 200 freestyle relay team of Luka Vrtovec, Justin Stephenson, Per Nylin and Emilio Garmendia qualified for the finals with the 14th fastest time of the prelims. They then finished the session with another great relay, the 400 medley. This time it was Ian Clark leading the way followed by Alex Hetland, Vrtovec and Nylin. The squad also garnered a spot in the finals by posting the 16th best time in the morning.
In the evening session, the 200 free relay team again finished 14th, completing the course in 1:20.06 and scoring six points for the Ponies. The team was led by senior Per Nylin, whose split of 19.28 was the 12th fastest split out of the 64 swimmers competing in the event. The SMU 400 medley relay squad moved up one spot to finish 15th in the finals, touching in 3:14.01. The result scored SMU four points.
SMU's 14 points scored on the first night of the competition are nearly three times the amount of points the `Stangs scored in the entire three-day meet last year. In addition, all seven Mustangs at the meet have already earned All-America status.
In the individual events, the Mustangs also put up some solid performances. In the 200 IM, Clark and Hetland took to the waters. Clark finished just outside the finals, finishing as the 19th fastest swimmer in the country while Hetland posted the 29th fastest time.
In the 50, SMU had four swimmers competing. Nylin led the way at 36th, Vrtovec followed in 44th, and Stephenson and Garmendia touched in 56th and 58th respectively.
The competition resumes Friday with the preliminary session starting at 11:00 am CST. It should prove to be a big day for the Mustangs as they will compete in the 200 medley relay, the 400 individual medley, the 100 fly and the 100 breaststroke. The Championships run through Saturday.
