LAS CRUCES, NM (SMU) - In only the second match to be played at the new NMSU Tennis Center, #52 SMU swept New Mexico St, 7-0. This win advances the Mustangs to 14-5 this season and continues the win streak to seven.
"We were very mentally tough," head coach Rob Howarth said. "We played great at all three doubles."
The Mustangs started off with winning the doubles point. At No. 1 Svetlana Kouzmenko and Natalia Bubien defeated Edine van Beusekom and Celine Du Fosse, 8-4. The duo of Monica Neveklovska and Kristen Reid paired for a, 8-5, win over Isabelle Mignot and Nicole Fintell. Brooke Rambally and Halley Rambally triumphed over Anne Fagegaltier and Paulina Zuniga, 8-3.
Howarth also noted, "We were really aggressive and had a positive attitude going out."
In singles action, the Mustangs were just as tough as Kouzmenko led the way with a, 7-5, 6-1, win over Isabelle Mignot. Bubien controlled van Beusekom at the No. 2 spot, 6-1, 6-1, as Georgiana Marta downed Fagegaltier, 6-4, 6-4, at the No.3 position.
At the No. 4 spot, Reid held on the beat Nicole Fintell, 6-4, 6-3, while B. Rambally overturned Du Fosse, 6-3, 6-1, at the No. 5 spot. H. Rambally walked away with a 6-2, 6-2, win over Zuniga at the No. 6 spot.
The Mustangs finish the last part of their road trip back at UTEP against conference opponent #71 Houston on Sun., April 2 at 10 a.m. The Cougars are 15-3 on the season and undefeated in conference play as they are 2-0. Houston is led by Brianna Bateup as she is 3-2 at the No. 1 singles. Loli Gomez has also seen time at the No. 1 spot as she is 4-8. The Cougars are coming off a 6-1 win against NMSU yesterday. Houston has won eight of its last nine matches.
