Mustangs Narrowly Miss NCAA Finals

COLLEGE STATION (SMU) - The SMU women's golf team narrowly missed qualifying for the 2006 NCAA Championship final on Saturday, May 13, finishing 12th at the NCAA Central Regional at the par-72 Traditions Golf Club. The top eight teams from the Regional advance to the championships finals and SMU carded a 299 over the final 18 to finish at 934 for three rounds, 12 strokes out of eighth place.

SMU's final-round 299 was 20 shots better than its third-round 319 and 17 shots lower than its opening round. With the strong final round, SMU (934) was the top Conference USA finisher, edging Tulsa (937), and also topped rivals Baylor (938) and TCU (950).

SMU was led throughout the event by Jennifer Ackerson, who finished tied for 26th at 229 (77-78-74). Laura Cross's final-round 74 led the junior to a 49th-place finish at 233 (79-80-74). Mustangs Lacey Jones (81-78-77) and Kate Ackerson (79-83-74) tied for 58th at 236, while Kristina Rothengatter (83-85-79) finished 88th at 247.
