SAN ANTONIO (SMU) - The Mustangs were unable to overturn UTSA as they fell 3-0 (30-21, 30-21, 30-21) tonight at the Convocation Center in San Antonio, Texas. The Mustangs are now 3-1 on the year.
The Mustangs were led by Natalie Peters who marked 10 kills while Caitlin Rainbird and Rachel Giubilato tallied 15 and 11 digs, respectively. Stefanie Kons notched 22 assists, four kills and six digs. Kendra Kahanek accounted for eight kills.
The Mustangs struggled to get started in game one and then were not able to get going in game two despite sparks from freshmen Kahanek and Adrienne Zielasko.
SMU came out with a spark in game three taking the early lead. UTSA knotted the score at 9-9 as the Mustangs were charged by the upperclassmen with kills coming from Peters, Rainbird and Giubilato. Kons directed the offense with Jenny Reyes offering help at the serving line. UTSA began to close the gap when Rainbird nailed down a point but then had a service error. The roadrunners used that to their advantage and knotted the score at 20-20 before a kill from UTSA to take the lead. The Mustangs were unable to bounce back as UTSA continued their momentum and SMU was plagued with errors.
Then Mustangs will return to their home courts this weekend as they host UTA, Grambling St. and Toledo in the Radisson Hotel Mustang Classic. The matches start on Friday with SMU playing UTA at 7:00 p.m. and then all teams double up matches on Saturday. The Mustangs will play Grambling St. at 1:30 p.m. then conclude the night and the Classic at 7:30 p.m. against Toledo.
