The Mustangs were not able to topple conference foe, Tulsa tonight as they fell, 3-0. SMU is now 7-4 on the season and 0-1 in conference play while Tulsa advances to 10-3 overall and 1-0 in conference.
Caitlin Rainbird led the Mustangs with 12 kills and seven digs on the night while Rachel Giubilato registered 11 kills, nine digs and three blocks. Natalie Peters accumulated 10 kills and four blocks and Kendra Kahanek nailed nine kills and two blocks.
Tulsa jumped out to the lead in game one, as the Mustangs tried to knock away points. With a late rally, SMU pulled within two points but were unable to get ahead as Tulsa edged the Mustangs, 30-25.
In game two the Mustangs took the quick lead. SMU worked to hold off the Golden Hurricanes as they made a run, eventually tying the score at 17-17. The teams swapped points for a while, but Tulsa pulled away in the end, winning the second game, 30-23.
The squads traded early points in game three, but Tulsa pulled away as they made a 6-0 run, bringing the score to 13-6. For the rest of the game, the teams continued to battle, with the points flip-flopping almost every series. Tulsa made the late 5-0 run to seal the win, 30-21.
The Mustangs head to Indiana for a weekend tournament against Mercer, Chattanooga and Indiana. SMU will play one match on Fri., Sep. 15 and then will play two games on Sat.
